Shuttle racks are semi-automated, high-density storage systems in which motorized shuttles travel along tracks within storage aisles to load and unload pallets. This process is controlled by an operator, who uses a forklift to position the shuttles onto the racks and controls the system via a tablet.
Compared to other high-density solutions, such as drive-in racking, shuttle racking systems increase storage capacity, goods flow, and the number of products stored.
1. Increased Productivity
Shuttles automatically move load units within the aisles, freeing operators to perform other tasks simultaneously, improving overall productivity. This allows for faster order picking, reduced loading and unloading times, and increased cycles per hour.
2. Space Savings
Utilizing 100% of storage locations and up to 90% of warehouse floor space, the system is more efficient than a standard drive-in system.
3. Reduced Costs
The system's compact footprint optimizes space utilization and reduces land costs. For refrigerated warehouses, it reduces the required cooling surface area and lowers energy consumption.
4. Diverse SKU Management
SKUs can be stored by aisle group rather than entire aisles, increasing product diversity within the storage system.
5. High Safety
Forklifts no longer need to enter shelf aisles, reducing accidents and the risk of shelf damage. System operation is accomplished through an intuitive control interface, minimizing human error.
Placement: A forklift or conveyor places each pallet at the entry point of its designated storage aisle.
Engagement: A shuttle located at the lane entrance retrieves the pallet.
Movement: Using motors and guided by tracks, the shuttle transports the pallet to the next available storage location.
Placement: With robotic precision, the shuttle places the pallet in the correct, perfectly aligned position.
Retrieval: When the pallet is needed, the shuttle retrieves it from the storage location and returns it to the storage aisle entry point for pickup or transfer.
